The pursuit is closed, not finished

Topicspursuit, milestone, honesty

The 30 August entry ends with a promise: confirmed, and frozen from here; it does not get touched again. It held until 22 September. By then the arrest worked, dispatch worked, and the pursuit was plainly the weakest link left in the loop, so it was opened again. This time in stages, each one written down and played before the next.

What came out of it is a different chase from the one described in August. He no longer shoots at you from the start. He drives his street in ordinary traffic until you get within thirty metres, then he runs, and he only turns hostile once you attack him: a shot he can hear, a hit on him or on his car. If his car gets stuck near you, he gets out. If you never touched him, he runs on foot, and two times in ten he comes out fighting anyway. He is lost after ten seconds in a row more than 200 metres away, and that count only starts once you have caught up with him for the first time. All of it was played and confirmed between 25 and 28 September.

What it does not do is written down too, because that is the point of closing it rather than calling it done. It does not brake before corners: for that the mod would need to know where the street goes next, and it does not. The game's road network could not be extracted, and asking the game for the route its own driver was about to take returned nothing, every single time. Where traffic is heavy he dodges late and clips cars. The extra moves — a burst of speed, a deliberate U-turn, a swerve — are a plan, not code. And he has not got away once in eleven chases.

It was sealed on 3 October, after a month on this one system, because the rest of the mod had waited long enough. Sealed means its code is locked: anything that touches it halts the install until someone signs off, and a fixed set of checks runs against every play session, whether that build was about the pursuit or not.

The way forward for the corners is unglamorous: record the streets. Drive them, log them, and hand the getaway car the map the game would not.
